Music Therapy

Picture
The Gulf Breeze School of Music offers services and lessons to our special needs community! Our newest Board-Certified Music Therapist, Rachael Lawson, MT-BC is excited to offer music therapy sessions and adaptive lessons to children and adults with special needs.

What are Adaptive Lessons?
Led by a Board-Certified Music Therapist, lessons are accommodated and adapted to the student’s needs. Adaptive Lessons are purely for the purpose of learning an instrument such as piano, guitar, voice, ukulele, etc.  Music is for everyone!

Some examples of adaptations include:
  • Breaking instruction into small steps
  • Specific focus on the student’s specific learning style
  • Adaption for gross-motor special needs
  • Focus on the student's preferred songs and favorite types of music
  • Using a variety of activities such as musical games, movement, rhythm instruments to reinforcement concepts
  • Use of color coded notation and other visuals
  • Using pitch and rhythm patterns from the songs students are learning
  • Varying the pacing of the lesson to include many activities to help the student maintain concentration

What is Music Therapy?
Music Therapy is a type of therapy that focuses on reaching individual goals through evidence-based music intervention.
Examples of music therapy goals may include:
  • Improving expressive and receptive communication skills
  • Improving fine and gross motor skills
  • Improving cognitive and academic skills
Music Therapy is fun and interactive, and uses the client's preferred music in therapy! Music Therapy is great for individuals with developmental disabilities and special needs such as Autism, Down Syndrome, Rett Syndrome, Hearing Impairments, Speech Delays, ADHD, Cerebral Palsy, Williams Syndrome, Traumatic Brain Injuries, and other diagnoses.
